Give Hope. Save A Life

At your Community Foundation of White County, we are committed to making a positive impact that strengthens our community. To guide this important work, we collected local data and held community conversations with diverse stakeholders and members, ultimately identifying mental wellness as a priority issue where we can make a meaningful difference. As part of our ongoing commitment to addressing and better understanding this critical issue, we invited Emily Hall from Indiana University Health to lead our Governing Council through a QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training. This training is a pivotal step in our broader effort to enhance mental wellness across White County, demonstrating our council’s commitment to supporting mental wellness not just from an organizational standpoint but also as individuals who care deeply about our community.

But what is QPR? QPR is a vital suicide prevention method that equips individuals with the knowledge to recognize the warning signs of a potential suicide attempt and understand how to guide someone to the help they need.

While QPR is not a treatment for mental health crises, it is a powerful tool that empowers everyday people to act as first responders in moments of crisis. By learning to ask the right questions, persuade someone to seek help, and refer them to the appropriate resources, we can all play a part in preventing suicide and saving lives.

The benefits of QPR training are profound. It creates a safety net within the community, where more individuals are equipped to intervene effectively when someone is in distress. This training fosters a culture of awareness and proactive care, ensuring that more people know how to respond in critical moments.

At the Community Foundation, we believe that mental wellness is a shared responsibility. Our council has made the personal commitment to give hope to someone in a mental health crisis. Do you want to learn how to save a life, too? IU Health can offer this training for free to other organizations in the community, further expanding our safety net across the community. Together, we can make a difference—one conversation, one life, at a time.
